I've watched both Stargate and Farscape, but my ultimate fave TV sci-fi is Star Trek: Voyager. In the Star Trek universe wormholes do take you places, but since they are unpredictable they weren't used as a regular transport option, although there were a few episodes involving them.
After finally seeing Avatar tonight, that is my new fave movie. It doesn't say what form of long range travel is involved but since they had to undergo cryo sleep I'd say it wasn't wormholes.

My husband and I love sci-fi and fantasy, so we're Farscape and Stargate fans. I love the whole wormhole thing. Strangely, it echoes the Alice-down-the-rabbit-hole experience, which was obviously something that could be imagined long before Einstein, space travel and Stephen Hawking.

My favorite sci-fi films are the Star Wars movies. They use hyperspace to get from here to there, which can be seen as a type of wormhole. Any sort of veil between worlds has to be pushed through by the heroes, and it's a useful physical symbol of the beginning of the story's arc.
