Canada Haunts: The Ghost Road

Things which go bump in the night eh?

I am so excited to be here, my name is Amy Ruttan and on the third Monday of every month I’m going to be here talking about Canadian Hauntings. Despite our frigid temperatures in the winter Canada has a spooky and chilling history. We got ghosts! Lots of ghosts!

So I thought for my inaugural post I would talk about a ghost I have actually had an experience with. There have been a couple, but this ghost was my first ghost. It was when I thought hauntings were a hoax, when I was young naïve and stupid.

After that strange night, I didn’t think hauntings and ghosts were hoax. Nor did I think they were an anomaly of the Matrix either! ;-)

In a picturesque town called Port Perry, just north east of Toronto Ontario, is an Island called Scugog Island on the pristine waters of Scugog Lake. I spent many a happy childhood summer here. In a small cottage town called Caesarea; but that’s not either here or there. I spent a lot of time in this lazy, beautiful village. I love Port Perry; but there’s a darker side to Port Perry.

On the Island Road, a long stretch of road which runs north and south a terrible misfortunate happened to one reckless young man. It is said sometime in the sixties a young man with a penchant for speed decided to race his bike across a farmer’s field. Not knowing there was a barb wire fence, the young man and his head became … separated.

Tragic. Especially since no one knows the name of the mysterious bikers, nor were there any accounts of accidents or decapitations around the time. Could it be a much older spirit haunting the road?

Scugog Island long ago used to be a trail used by local first nations. I have heard tales of a war being fought between two tribes. In fact some historical artifacts and skeletal remains of these ancient tribes have been found there.

So now visitors who are lucky, or unlucky as the case may be, when visiting the Island Road at night can see the red tail lights of the bike speeding away. Other eyewitness accounts talk about radios flickering, door locks locking and unlocking. Others have tried to test the theory of lights being reflected on an opposite road at a higher elevation; but they have been disproved. Though some say they were proven right.

Who knows?

My one night on the ghost road with my DH, then was my fiancé, was one freaky night on a seemingly deserted road with a strange light. Our radio flickered, and the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end.

Being the big chicken, we legged it out of there. After that I paid more attention to hauntings. Especially Canadian ones.

So next month I’ll be bringing you a tale of murder, lynching, and revenge on the old Roman Line in Lucan Ontario.

So, do you believe in ghosts? Ever have a haunting of our own?
