Interview with professional astrologer, Deana Gast

My guest today is professional astrologer, Deana Gast. Thanks for agreeing to be interviewed.

So tell me about yourself. How long have you been an astrologer and what prompted your interest in astrology?

I have been a student of astrology for just over 15 years.  I was traveling and decided to get my nails done; instead of doing nails, the technician walked me through my natal chart. It was amazing! It was a language that I just understood. It immediately spoke to me.  I rented a taxi and purchased the few astrology books the small town bookstore had and headed to the beach. The rest is history!

What is an astrology chart? Can you explain the basics for us?

The astrological natal chart is like DNA. It is our own personal imprint from the heavens.  The position of the sun, moon, planets and stars at the exact moment of one’s birth time creates the natal chart which is divided into the twelve constellation houses.  Interpreting each house gives us greater understanding of ourselves. The placement of celestial bodies shapes our personal preferences, our needs, wants, fears, talents and even physical appearance.

I attended a wonderful class you taught called “You are every sign.”  What does that mean and how does that apply to astrology interpretation?

The twelve zodiac signs fall some place in our natal chart. Many people think of astrology as the horoscope that they read in the paper that is determined by their Sun sign.  Our universe is much more complex than this one component.  With twelve houses in our natal chart this means that every zodiac sign is in our natal chart.   Each House in our natal chart is ruled by one of the zodiac signs, giving that area the personality traits of that astrological sign.

When we met you explained the concept of “New Moon Wishes” to me.  What are they and how are they tied to astrology? Are there any new moons more powerful than others? Is there a special time for extra wishes?

New Moon Astrology is great fun!  For generations the farmer’s almanac has been using the moon to advise people in planting and tending to their gardens and crops.  I use the New Moon of every month to plant wishes!  Using the Jan Spillner’s theory, I hand write 10 wishes that I would like to come to fruition in the next month.  Once a year we all have a granddaddy period. This time of the year we get 40 wishes! Each Astrological New year, when the new moon is  in Aries,  I throw a vision board party to make wishes for the New Year.

Would you recommend any computer software or books on astrology you’d recommend for beginners or for the more advanced student?

  • The Only Astrology Book You Will Ever Need by Joanna Martine Woolfolk , is a great book for anyone wanting to learn astrology. This comes with beginner software that allows you to create charts and learn the basics of the signs, stars, planets, and how they relate to you.

Advanced astrology students would like Planets in Transit, by Robert Hand or Transits of the West by James Braha.
