Movie Review: Knowing

Happy Holidays, y’all! I’d planned to do my review on a holiday movie this month, but after seeing Knowing with Nicholas Cage, I decided to move things around. I don’t normally care for Cage (at least not of late), but the storyline and the right slicing of the previews reeled me in enough to add this one to my Netflix queue. And ya “know”, I’m glad I did.

Title: Knowing
Sub-genre: Sci-fi paranormal thriller
Current available format(s): DVD and Blu-ray
Length: Approx. 2 hrs. 1 min.
Movie rating: PG-13
Review rating: A-

Fifty years ago, a time capsule was buried on a grade-school property. Fast-forward to present day where college professor John Koestler (Nicholas Cage) is the grieving widower and father of a pre-teen son with emerging special abilities. The time capsule is unearthed and each child receives an item from its contents. John’s son is the recipient of a piece of paper scribbled with hundreds of random numbers. As John takes on the task of deciphering the code, he begins to realize the author of the single sheet of paper was gifted too, and somehow able to predict events that have since come to fruition.

There are many “deep” themes and questions asked during this movie, and ultimately, the grieving John wonders how he can let go and see the big picture for the sake of mankind. Or will he choose to heal his own heart while forsaking all others including his own son?

I used to be a Nicholas Cage fan, but his movies in recent years haven’t held my interest. This one, however, redeems him as a somewhat fave actor in my long list of faves. With its jaw-dropping surprise ending, thought-provoking themes, perfect amount of paranormal activity, special effects and decent acting, I give this one an A-. If you’re looking for a good rental over the holiday break, I highly recommend Knowing.

Merry Christmas and Happy 2010!
